Four local organisations got a helping hand at the Works Weekend when over a hundred volunteers from different churches got stuck in to help with gardening, painting and clearing rubbish.
Open Door hostel for the homeless on Bricket Road saw rooms painted, rubbish cleared away and their food stockroom sorted out. The gardens and grounds of Grove House Hospice were spruced up, and environmental charity earthworks had help with clearing a footpath and running their open day. The Out-Patients department of the City hospital even got a lick of fresh paint.
Jacquie Follett, local organiser said "It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages working alongside each other to support some worthwhile causes. We hope this demonstrates to the people around us the hope and unity we have through our Christian faith".
Afterwards volunteer Louise Watson commented "I enjoyed working alongside some new people, doing something worthwhile. It was good that it was local people serving local projects, as it helps build the community".
